Wales Tales - March 2010

Although we did not really break any snowfall records this season, we did enjoy snow just about the whole way through. The snow came and stayed nicely. I hope that everyone was able to get out and enjoy a lot of riding.
I guess all good things end eventually, so we have set the weekend dates of March 27th and 28th to remove the trail signage and close the gates; see details below.

Membership Meeting: On Thursday night, February 25th, the membership meeting was held at the Greene Township Building. There were 5 Board members and 9 members present. The weather was not the best that night, so it probably played a role in the number of members that were able to make it to the meeting.

Kent Kessler continues to work on making our new groomer a reality and, as of the meeting, was waiting on a call back to obtain more information on the progress of our groomer grant.

Congratulations to the following members after the membership voting that took place at the meeting:

• Randy Nowakowski 3 yr term on BOD
• Travis Clabbatz 3 yr term on BOD
• Steve Hair 3 yr term on BOD
• Mark Sonney Will finish out the last year of Keith Zambrzycki's term
• Fred Morris Auditor

Although Steve was unable to be present at the meeting, he was nominated for President.

Fundraisers: The Greene Township food pantry has donated a beautiful handmade throw and pillow to our club to raffle off as a fundraiser to help with our expenses. We are selling tickets for $2 each or 3 for $5. Tickets are still available and the winner will be drawn at the March 25th membership meeting.

Our lottery based fundraiser is actively paying out to the March winners. Remember, fundraiser proceeds go directly to offset our 20% match against our groomer grant. Over 150 stubs and payment were returned. This fundraiser should be very good for us and hopefully fun for those that are wishing for their number(s) to come in. Thanks to all who sold and bought tickets! Good Luck to everyone.

Remember the Ski Doo Dollars fundraiser from last Fall? Well we are expecting to receive $1,450 from all the entries that were turned in. The maximum we could have received was $1,500, so we were very close. There were 31 clubs that participated in PA for a total of $8,080, so we did very well. In comparison, 174 clubs participated in NY for a total of $56,300.

Awards: Annually our club submits the names of a few key individuals and entities, who have distinguished themselves in the support of our sport, to ECSA for awards. This year the following nominations were accepted by ECSA:

Family of the year – Frank Winkelbauer Snowmobiler of the year – Ken Zambrzycki
Hall of Fame – Fred Morris Snowmobile Club of the year – Presque Isle
Dealer Appreciation - Off Road Express

Poker Run: This year’s Poker Run raised over $3,000.00 for the club! Not only did we have great weather and great fun, but we raised a healthy amount for our club. Thanks to all who participated! Thanks also to all who helped stage this great event and to those who groomed in preparation for the event. Even Presque Isle helped us to get the trails in great shape. Thanks Guys!

Trails: Speaking of Presque Isle, Wales would like to thank PISC for all the work they did on the connecting links between our two clubs. Paul Vallimont and his crew did the footwork to find not one but two routes to connect our trails. Then they proceeded to purchase the material, install the material including signs, cut the new trails through the properties and then they groomed the new trails giving it extra passes all the way to the gas line the night before our poker run. If you see Paul, Dick, Rusty and the rest of their crew thank them for their efforts!

Do you live near an area where our trail is on the road? Do you know or have a relationship with the landowners in the area? Perhaps you might be able to discuss the possibility of land usage with them to get our trail off the road. You never know until you ask.

The Wales trail clean up and sign removal is scheduled for Saturday March 27th @ 9:00 AM., and if necessary, again on Sunday March 28th. Members can meet at the barn on Backus Rd. or if you prefer, you can just start at your section of trail (if you prefer to do this please let me know so we do not send extra crews to the same location). When you are done at your section, we will be at the barn to put the signs away. Please lend a hand so we can get this project done in one day. If anyone cannot make it on Saturday and would rather do it on Sunday call me and let me know so we can plan accordingly. My cell # is 440-0595. Thanks, Ken Zambrzycki.

Memberships: The 2010 membership stands at 100 (110 last year). Thank You very much for your support.

Sunshine Person: Please note that Mary Ann Matasowski has volunteered to be our sunshine person. If you know of any of our members that have fallen ill, please contact Mary Ann at (814) 825-2067.

Next Meeting: The next general membership meeting will be held Thursday, March 25th, at 8:00PM at the Greene Township Building on Tate road. In addition to the regular meeting topics, we will be discussing trail and signage removal activities planned for Saturday March 27th and Sunday the 28th. Can you help us with these activities this year?

This will be the last membership meeting before the summer break.

See you at the meeting.- T. Bowers
