Wales Tales - January 2010

Well, although we are not setting any snowfall records this season, we did get quite a bit to allow everyone to get some riding in. Recently the temperatures have been above freezing, so we may have to wait for another batch of storms to get the ground cover we prefer.

We had to change the date of our Poker Run this year to February 13, 2010. Please see details below.

Membership Meeting: On Thursday night, December 17th the membership meeting was held at the Greene Township Building. 6 Board members and 22 members were present and everyone enjoyed Christmas snacks and beverages after the meeting.

We are currently awaiting a DCNR round 4 Grant to help with our expenses. The picks were installed in our groomer’s track the weekend of 12/19/09. Kent Kessler reported that a contract is being written for our large groomer in Harrisburg. Our next step will be to get equipment re-quotes. He will keep us posted. Thanks Kent!

Fundraisers: Our first fundraiser of the season is underway. Some of the March 2010 PA Lottery Fund Raiser tickets have been sold and returned. Have you sold or bought yours yet? If you have, Thank You. If you have not had the chance yet, you still have time, but please don’t forget. Hopefully this fundraiser will help us realize our plans to obtain a large groomer to use on our trail system. Please help to support if you can. Make sure everyone understands that they have 31 chances to win with one ticket!

If you are easily able to sell the tickets and would like to sell more, please let us know and we can send more.

We have started to explore the possibility to have a gun raffle in July. Does anyone in our membership have any experience in this type of fundraiser that could give us some helpful hints and ideas? We would like to have a successful raffle, so if you could help us it would be great - please let us know.

Charity Drive: The second collection for the area food pantry was taken at the December meeting. Combining the funds mailed in with the donations given at the meeting, we added an additional $112.00 to the total for the Greene Township Food Pantry. We will be taking donations again at the January meeting. Our total now stands at $174.00. If you don’t think you will be able to attend this meeting but would like to donate, you can mail your donation to; Wales Sno-Drifters, Inc., PO Box 7223, Wesleyville Station, Erie, PA. 16510.

The club will add its contribution to the membership gifts and the total will be submitted for matching gifts and presented to the food pantry. Your donation will enable the food pantry to buy $34 of food with each $1 donated.

Trails: It has been a tough season to groom with the fluffy snow and really cold temperatures. Hopefully we will get conditions that will allow the grooming efforts to "set" and then get some fresh snowfall. Thanks go out to Mark Sonney and all those that have made time to groom for everyone’s sake and enjoyment. Those that showed an interest in grooming have likely been contacted already, but if you have not and are able to help with the grooming, please let Mark know at (814) 866-5241.

The Game Lands opened (with snow) for snowmobiling this season on January 17, 2009.

Please stay on the trail which the Game Commission approves for us to follow through the Game Lands. We would not want to lose this major connector to Phillipsville and the #4 trail to New York.

Be careful out there while you enjoy the snow!

If you happen to notice any of our trails that need work while you are out riding, please contact a Board member so we can address.

Memberships: This year’s membership drive is now over. The 2009-10 membership stands at 77 members, which is down from last year’s 85 at this time. While we have lost a few previous members, there are 4 new members. Perhaps some previous members are waiting for our Poker Run to renew.

To our current membership, Thank You very much for your support.

54 of our current members (70%) have granted us use of their E-mail addresses for club correspondence. This saves the club $24 every mailing; monies that can be used on trail improvements! Thanks! If you receive your club info by regular mail and have an E-mail address, please consider sharing it with us to reduce our postage bill. E-mail your address to TBowers3@roadrunner.com and I will add you to our list.

With or without snow, the club continues to incur operational expenses, such as insurance, postage, trail material and maintenance. Without sufficient membership the club can not continue to provide a viable trail system. There are many snowmobilers out there! You see their tracks every time it snows. They ride the trails that the club works so hard to maintain. So, as you ride and talk to these snowmobilers, don’t be hesitant to ask them if they are a snowmobile club member. If they are not, give them an application or tell them of our website, where they can get an application. Suggest they support an organization that helps provide a means for them to enjoy their sport.

Trails don’t just happen !

Acknowledgements: Again, this year, Off Road Express has generously agreed to underwrite a portion of our trail grooming costs. Their contribution will go toward fuel for the grooming sleds. When you are at Off Road, remember to tell them Thanks! If you’re looking for a sled, Off Road has a large selection of late model sleds priced to sell – all makes and models. Check them out!

Poker Run: The date for our Poker Run was changed to Saturday, February 13, 2010.

(No Snow Date 2/20/10).

Registration is at the Greene Township Municipal Building on Tate road in our clubhouse room.

Registration is from 10 am to Noon and the winning hands will be drawn promptly at 4:00 p.m.

Plan on attending the Poker Run - it’s a great time. It is also a perfect time to introduce a friend to snowmobiling. See everyone Saturday 2/13/2010 for the 2010 Wales Sno-Drifters Poker Run.

Sunshine Person: Please note that Mary Ann Matasowski has volunteered to be our sunshine person. If you know of any of our members that have fallen ill, please contact Mary Ann at (814) 825-2067.

Next Meeting: The next general membership meeting will be held Thursday, January 28th, at 8:00pm at the Greene Township Building on Tate road. Come tell us about your snowmobiling tales.

See you at the meeting. - T. Bowers
