Wales Tales - February 2011

We have had some great riding conditions since the first of the year. We had perfect conditions for our Poker Run and plenty of snow since then. However, we have been seeing some warmer weather moving in, so we may have to wait a little bit for some fresh flakes to add to our great base.

Membership Meeting: On Thursday night, January 27th the membership meeting was held at the Greene Township Building. There were 9 Board members and 25 members present; some of which came on their sleds. We had a very full house and it was great to see such a wonderful turnout.

We discussed that nominations are now open for Board member and Auditor nominations. Nominations for the Board included George Engesser, Daniel Hartman, Mark Sonney, Tim Bowers, Lance Dunn, Danny Jones and Rodney Bootes. Diana Engesser was nominated for our Auditor. Our nominating committee members, Fred Morris & John Matasowski, are accepting additional names for consideration as our elections will be held at the February membership meeting on 2/24. We have openings for three board members and a new auditor. You should give your suggestions or recommendations to Fred (899-6307) or John (825-2067).

Fundraisers: The third and final collection for the Greene Township food pantry was taken at the January meeting. With the donations that were mailed in and given at the meeting, we added $47.00 to our total. The January additions brought our total collections to $277.00. The Club moved to donate $100.00 to the pantry, bringing the total to $377.00. This total will be submitted for matching gifts and presented to the food pantry. With the matching gifts, your donations will enable the food pantry to buy $34 of food for each $1 donated, or almost $13,000.00 in food buying power. Thank you for your generosity!

Memberships: Our 2011 membership stands at 119 which includes 40 new members. This is up 18% from last year’s membership. Currently, 96 of our members (81%) have granted us use of their E-mail addresses for club correspondence. This saves the club over $42.00 every mailing; monies that can be used on trail improvements! Thanks! If you receive your club info by regular mail and have an E-mail address, please consider sharing it with us to reduce our postage bill. E-mail your address to TBowers3@roadrunner.com and I will add you to our list.

Thank You very much for your support.

Poker Run: Our Poker Run was held on Saturday, February 29, 2011. The weather was perfect with plenty of snow, the trails were groomed and were in GREAT condition and we had a wonderful turnout. There were 147 poker hands played this year. In comparison, last year we had 150 poker hands played. Thanks to all who participated! Thanks also to all who helped stage this great event!

The winners at our Poker Run this year were:

1st Place hand with 5 Tens – Keith Zajac ($200.00)
2nd Place hand with 5 Nines – Andy Kania ($130.00)
3rd Place hand with 4 Jacks – Chris Curtis ($85.00)

Our 50/50 was won by Tim Hahn – ($245.00). The Ham, which was donated by Walter’s Meat, was won by Mark Sonney. We also collected $72.00 in trail grooming donations at the Poker Run.

Thanks for all of your support to make this another successful fund raising event!

Trails: While our new groomer and drag are working great, we do have a section of our trail that is closed for the season due to ongoing logging operations. The section is part of trail 44 (North trail), so watch for gate closings and signs in this area.  The by-pass for this section is Knoyle Rd.

Awards: Annually our club submits the names of a few key individuals and entities, who have distinguished themselves in the support of our sport, to ECSA for awards. This year they are:

Snowmobiler’s friend (Business) – Jelley Sign World

Snowmobiler of the year – Mark Omniewski

Family of the year – George Engesser Family

Snowmobile Club of the year – Wales

Dealer Appreciation - Off Road Express

Hall of Fame – Bob Hunt

Sunshine Person: Please note that Mary Ann Matasowski has volunteered to be our sunshine person. If you know of any of our members that have fallen ill, please contact Mary Ann at (814) 825-2067.

Next Meeting: The next general membership meeting will be held Thursday, February 24th, at 8:00pm at the Greene Township Building on Tate road. The election of new Club officers and president will be held. (The membership in attendance will elect the Club president for the coming year from one of the nine board members.)

See you at the meeting. - T. Bowers
