Wales Tales - February 2007

Manna from heaven!  The white stuff has finally arrived.  Hope everyone is making good use of it.

Membership Meeting:  On Thursday night, January 25th the membership meeting was held at the Greene Township Building .  Attendance was up – does snow make that happen?  Some in attendance rode their sleds.  Our nominating committee, Fred Morris & John Matasowski, has checked our membership and present the following names for your consideration at the elections to be held at the February membership meeting:  for Board member – Steve Hair , Fred Morris, Mark Omniewski and Rob Tobin; for Auditor – Gary Darr and Art Wheeler.  The club needs three new board members and one auditor.  Be sure to come and cast your ballet for these positions.  As a reminder, the membership in attendance will also elect the club president for the coming year from one of the nine board members.

Poker Run:   Our president and chairman of the Poker Run, Steve Hair , coordinated a great event for area smowmobilers and increased our working capital in the process.

 Chairman’s recap:

On Saturday, 1/27/07 , we had our annual Poker Run and it was a great experience.  We had 128 run participants and also gained 8 new members.  Mother Nature finally cooperated and everyone we talked with had a great time.

Special thanks to:  Kent Kessler , Dan Postlewaite , Tom Dipko, Marc Matczak , Frank Winkelbauer, Mark Sonney , Ken Zambrzycki , George and Denny Engesser, Fred Morris, Ed Simmer, John Matasowski and Kip Maas .

The winning hands were all “full houses”.  1st place, worth $173, was won by our new member Dale Williams.  2nd best hand, worth $115, was won by Lance Dunn, who also won the $224 50/50.  3rd place hand, worth $72, was won by Barry Slaughenhaupt.

Thanks to all who participated and helped.  We had a great time and look forward to next year's event.

Memberships:  The 2007 membership stands at 123 which includes 17 new members.

Trails:  Trails are in good shape.  For as much rain as we have had, there are very few water holes.  Wales ’ trails are some of the best in the area.  The open issue on trails remains the loss of Sunshine Lane in Lowville.  Status:  Doug Bender has taken the lead in resolving the problem.  He along with a couple other area residents and club officers met with the Venango Township Supervisors.  Doug has collected signatures of all property owners involved in the new proposed alternative.  These were presented to the Township Supervisors at their February 5th meeting.  Hopefully the good work done by Doug will be acceptable and we will again have a legal route through Lowville.  Any snowmobiler riding through Lowville needs to thank Doug for his diligent work on correcting this gap in our trail system.

Grooming:  The trails were groomed in preparation for the Poker Run which included some very late and early hours to complete before the 10:00am start.  More snow and more trail use makes for the need for more trail grooming work.  We are finding that the Yanmar while a great summer trail machine but is lacking in traction to groom on all our hills and grades.  Options for improved performance are being investigated.  Meanwhile we still have our two Yamaha sleds and drags.  They are again positioned at club member; Tom Hall’s place and will be used in tandem to make our trail system smoother and enjoyable.

Sunshine person: It’s been sometime since we have commended on this club’s position.  For many years Maryann Matasowski has graciously agreed to be our “Sunshine Person”.  You ask; what does she do?  As the title states, she brings a little sunshine into the life of our members when needed.  When someone is ill or loses a love one, Maryanne arranges to send an appropriate card on the club’s behalf.  She does a great job but has a problem.  She is not all knowing and needs your input.  If you become aware of a club member, club member’s immediate family or one of our trail property owners that has become hospitalized, injured or has lost a loved one, please call Maryanne (825-2067) and let her know.  She would appreciate any and all assistance.

Next meeting:  The next membership is Thursday, February 22nd at 8:00pm at the Greene Township Building .  Don’t forget the elections of new officers and president will be held.
