Wales Tales - December 2007

Ho, Ho, HoMerry Christmas!

Tis the season to be merry; especially if it snows.

Trail Work: Trails are shaping up. Scheduled trail signing on November 10th & 11th went very well. There was ample help. On Saturday, the workers were Steve Hair, Dale Williams, Ralph Eades, Clay Falls, Tom Mack, John Luchs, Chris Curtis, Steve Curtis, Kip Maas, Dan Postlewaite, Ted Bowen, Ken Zambrzycki, and Bob Hunt.  On Sunday the workers were, Jim Johnson, Bob Hunt, Mark Omniewski, Lance Dunn, Tony Desser, Steve Hair, John Luchs, Kip Mass, Ralph Eades, Tom Mack, Brad Bilski, Alex Slomski, Randy Slomski, Chris Curtis, Ken Zambrzyck, and Trail Coordinator – Marc Matczak.  The following Saturday (17th), more signing was completed by Fred Morris, Jim Johnson (and his son) and Marc Matczak.  The finishing touches were added during the week by Marc Matczak and crew of Leah, Laura, and Emily Matczak. A big THANK YOU goes out to all these workers for making the trails ready for the rest of us!

All trails other than the Game Lands will open (with snow) after hunting season which ends on Dec. 8th. The trail on the Game Lands WILL NOT open until after their extended hunting season which ends January 15th. Please respect the Game Commissions delayed opening of the Game Land trail. We would not want to loose this major connector to Phillipsville and the #4 trail to New York.

November Meeting: On Thursday night, November 15th the membership meeting was held at the Greene Township Building. Attendance continues to grow slowly – 20 interested and supportive snowmobilers attended. Action was taken to submit for a $2000 "Mini-Grant" with PSSA to offset some of our grooming cost this year. If approved, it will go a long ways toward covering some of our grooming expenses.

The second of three collections for the area food pantry was taken. An additional $62 was collected – that brings the members donation to $122. You too have time to add your gift to this worthy cause. Donations will also be taken at the December meeting. If you don’t think you will be able to attend this meetings but would like to donate, you can mail your donation to; Wales Sno-Drifter, Inc., PO Box 7223, Wesleyville Station, Erie, PA. 16510. Your donation will enable them to buy $34 of food with each $1 donated. Lend your support behind the Club’s charity drive. The club will add its contribution to the membership gifts and the total will be submitted for matching gifts and presented to the food pantry in January.

Membership: This year’s membership drive is now over. To date, only 76 members have renewed plus with 6 new members have joined. Thank you very much for your support. That is sad compared to the 125 members we had last year. If you know anyone that has not renewed, gently remind them it’s not too late, for after this, they will no longer be receiving the newsletter or be considered a member. 65 of the membership have granted us use of their E-mail addresses for club correspondence. This saves the club $27 every mailing; monies that can be used on trail improvements! Thanks! If you receive your club info by regular mail and have an internet account, please consider sharing it with us and reduce out postage bill. Email your address to me at lkkglk@velocity.net and I’ll add you to our list.

Acknowledgements: Again this year, Off Road Express has generously agreed to under write a portion of our trail grooming cost. Their contribution will go toward fuel for the grooming sleds. At today’s gas prices, it will cost $50 each time the grooming sleds are sent out or $100 to groom the "Wales Loop". When you are in at Off Road, remember to tell them thanks! If you’re looking for a sled; Off Road has a large selection of late models sleds priced to sell – all makes and models. Check them out! From the President - Special thanks to Chris Curtis for the use of his tractor mounted post pounder and making the staking of the field behind the township building so much easier on Saturday, November 10th. Also thanks to Dr, Tom Mach for the loan of his Gator for doing the trail work on Sunday, November 11th. The Beechwood Inn requested that we fence off their new asphalt parking lot this year. A nice corridor was built along the cemetery to Route 8 for access to the gas station. Ralph Eades and Clay Fails put on a display of rope tricks while doing the Beechwood job. If you are brave, ask Ralph about it.

Trail changes: There is a new exit off the east end of Turner Road – past the cemetery. The property owner has given permission to enter their property after the culvert. No more down over the bank, across the bridge and through the wet area! The new turn off is about a hundred yards farther. Watch for the new sign locations. Also be alert to the new routing through Lowville. The new routing to Brown Ave south of Faulkner’s will be in affect this year. NO snowmobile/ATV’s allowed as posted by the township on the east section of Sunshine Lane. Thanks to Brad Bilski for allowing us to develop a new trail between Halfmoon and Route 89. It was trimmed and mowed on Sunday, November 11th. No trail markings were set this year but will be finalized for next year – It will be a nice alternative route.

Breaking News: Off Road Express has broadened their product offering. They have become the area’s newest and largest Arctic Cat Dealer! They will be handling the complete Arctic Cat product line of snowmobiles and ATV’s. They will also be able to support you on any parts and accessories. If you are thinking Arctic Cat; time to check out Off Road Express.

Poker Run: There is a lot of excitement growing over the up coming Poker Run. Changes this year will provide for extra opportunities to win some dough. There will be 7 stops and you go to as many and in any order that you choose. So, the more riding, the more stops the more opportunities for a great poker hand. The event sponsorships have been good and having great snow conditions on January 19th would be the icing on the cake.

Next Meeting: The next membership meeting / Christmas Party is Thursday, December 20th, at 8:00pm at the Greene Township Building. Please take note of the week earlier date due to the Holidays. The meeting will be short and the festivities will commence. Bring a favorite snack or finger food to share (beverage will be provided) as we celebrate the holidays and the beginning of a hopefully great snowmobile season. Come and join in.
